New Mobile Site
We have just launched a new mobile version of this site - m.trainspots. This page will use your smart device's GPS to loctate you and guide you to locations that are close to your present location.
Location notes
This location is no longer correct, with the building of the overground network and the addition of new lines, extended platforms and new overhead line masts the images available will be dramatically different. An update to this location is most welcome

Liverpool Road is in Islington, North London. It is a short walk from Highbury and Islington station (Victoria Line, Silverlink Metro and First Capital Connect) and overlooks the North London line between Highbury and Islington and Caledonian Road and Barnsbury
Railway type and traffic
Three track electrified railway (third rail AND 25kV) used by Freightliner, DRS, DB Schenker and London Overground. All 25kV electric trains use the northern most of the three tracks; London Overground usually use the two third rail lines whilst diesel hauled freights turn up on any line. The northern track is reversible.
Environment
It is an inner city location in a pretty upmarket neighbourhood, but, like anywhere in London, it always pays to be careful.
Road directions
Liverpool Road runs parallel with the A1 Holloway Road/Upper Street between the Angel and just south of Holloway Road tube station.

Parking
Parking is not easy, all the streets are metered or pay and display or are residents only.
Public transport
Highbury and Islington station is only five minutes walk away. Turn right out of the station, first right and then walk alongside the stations retaining wall until you reach Liverpool Road.

Amenities
Highbury Corner, Upper Street, Holloway Road has every conceivable cuisine from the extremely posh to the downright nasty. There are three or four pubs serving adequate food within a couple of minutes walk of the station.

Photographic notes
I think the best shot is looking east over the station, particularly westbounds on the reversible line. Loaded Freightliners look good snaking through the curved reversible platform. The shot is good from late morning to mid afternoon. Late afternoon in summer the sun swings towards the north side (the line is running NE/SW) which allows shots on the passenger lines, mainly of DB Schenker diesel hauled freights.

The shot looking west in the morning (up to around mid-day) is not bad but because the line is in a cutting with numerous over bridges you get little advanced notice of approaching eastbounds.
